University of Miami Hurricanes
Head Coach: Al Golden
2012 Record 7-5
Key Players (Offense): QB Stephen Morris(SR), RB Duke Johnson(SO), WR Phillip Dorsett(JR)
This year the Canes are a sleeper, but they return 10 offensive starters on offense. In college football the more returning starters you have, the better. This makes for a potent offensive attack, especially with sophomore sensation Duke Johnson toting the rock who managed to rack up over 2,000 all purpose yards. They also bring back one of the nation’s most underrated QBs in Stephen Morris. Last season Morris threw for 3,300 21 TDs and only 7 INTs. This was all with a young and injured WR core. This year the canes bring in a top ten recruited WR in Derrick Griffin. Griffin comes in as a freshman at 6’6 215. Look for him to be a bigtime target in the redzone. Pair him with Phillip Dorsett who had a solid sophomore campaign with over 800 yards receiving and they should be a great tag team.
While it seems as though the offense has much promise, which it does, the canes will also have to add to their running game. While Duke Johnson did have a great season, the Canes only averaged 147 RYPG (rushing yards per game), ranking them in the lower half of the country. The Canes also have to keep their O-line healthy, especially the big man Seantrel Henderson. They have one of the best O-lines in the country and if they can stay healthy, look for the Canes to have one of the best offenses in the nation.
Key players (Defense): OLB Denzel Perryman(JR), S Deon Bush(SO), DE Anthony Chickillo(JR), CB Tracy Howard (SO)
The Canes were very young on defense last year playing almost all underclassmen every game. This year they are still young but have a few juniors and seniors added to the mix. This should add for more consistent and better tackling on the defensive side of the ball. Anthony Chickillo has shown his talent in flashes as a young DE. Entering his junior season, look for big things this year and improvements on his technique. I believe he gets at least 10 sacks this year. Denzel Perryman is a great linebacker, but didn’t have as good a season last year as he did his freshman. Look for him to play with a chip on his shoulder as he enters his junior season. In the secondary, you have two bonafide playmakers in Tracy Howard and Deon Bush. Look for the Canes defense to be much better than last year, but some young players will still struggle some.
Record: 9-3 (1st ACC Coastal Division)
With this being Al Golden’s best team since he has arrived there, I expect a solid season from the Canes. I believe their offense will put up a lot of points this year and lead them to a lot of wins. However, on the flipside I do think the defense will be better, but I don’t believe their defense is as good as it could be. With 18 returning starters, I believe the Canes finish with 9 wins and make the turn to once again becoming great.
